Press Release

American College of Emergency Physicians Grants Formal Liaison Status to Society of Chest Pain Centers

COLUMBUS, OH – August 27, 2002. Michael L. Carius, MD, FACEP, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) announced today that the board of directors of ACEP has approved establishing a formal liaison relationship with the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC). This formal status was granted, “recognizing the important work of the Society of Chest Pain Centers and Providers,” said Dr. Carius.

Both professional societies have long shared members and have significant mission overlap. One area of particular interest to both societies is observation services in the emergency department (ED). Emergency department observation of patients presenting with chest pain is a key strategy in reducing heart attack deaths. ACEP and SCPC recently joined forces to successfully lobby the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for reimbursement of observation services in the ED.

As American hospitals move toward universal adoption of Chest Pain Centers in the emergency department, to more effectively and economically manage heart attacks, the sister societies will continue their historic cooperative leadership in this emerging health strategy.
