    CMS's (HCFA) proposed new regulation agrees to reimburse observation services in chest pain centers in hospitals' emergency rooms.

    In mid 2000, the Society of Chest Pain Centers and Providers reacted swiftly to a new HCFA regulation on APCs with a collaborative effort of the following societies:

    ACC, ACEP, AHA, ACP, ASIM, AMA and the ASNC.

    In pointing out the evidence-based information in peer reviewed journals on ERRORS to be made, should this regulation not be modified for chest pain evaluation in the emergency department.

    Today's 8/20/01 proposed regulation to be implemented January 1, 2002 takes into account the latest ACC/AHA guidelines being promoted for patients presenting to the emergency room with acute coronary syndrome, especially in regards to observation centers. This latest regulation can be found on the Federal Registry CMS 1159-P
