Accepted abstracts will be published in the September or December, 2008 issues of Critical Pathways in Cardiology. The Critical Pathways in Cardiology journal is index medicus listed, and is the official journal of the Society of Chest Pain Centers.
We invite abstracts on original scientific research activities and on demonstration activities related to Chest Pain Centers, Acute Cardiac Care, and Heart Failure in the following areas:
Acute Management of Chest Pain Patients with:
- Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI)
- Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) especially in regard to reducing time to treatment
- Management in the emergency department by the emergency physician, cardiologist, or both
- Point of care cardiac bedside markers
- Newer technology to advance the present day practice of chest pain evaluation, including Electron Beam Computed Tomography Scan (EBT) and ACI-TIPI to risk stratify patients presenting to chest pain centers
- Observation management of chest pain patients with moderate to low probability of ischemic heart disease, including outcomes and cost effectiveness
Heart Failure:
- Selection of the appropriate observation unit patient
- Heart failure risk stratification
- Outcomes prediction
- Management of the acutely decompensated heart failure patient
- Novel therapeutics
- Appropriate use of established treatments
- Protocol development
- Diagnostics
- Patients disposition decisions
- Discharge planning
- Financial efficacy
Non-Cardiac Chest Pain:
- Identification of etiologies
- Approaches management
- Efficacy of management
Outreach:
- Outreach cardiac awareness message from Chest Pain Centers
- Interpreting what is currently known and applying it
Administration:
- Effects of Accreditation Review on Chest Pain Processes
- Chest Pain Center administration
Process Improvement:
- Registry and database collection, especially in regard to CQI and restructuring for optimal chest pain management in emergency departments
- Efficacy of Chest Pain Centers in reducing inadvertent discharge of patients with ACS
- The effective use of Chest Pain Centers to minimize and eliminate error and improve patient safety
The Society also accepts previously published abstracts.

Rules for Preparation and Submission of Abstracts
Abstract Submission Process
- All accepted Abstract Presenters receive a special reduced registration rate of $175.00.
- The online abstract process must be used for your abstract submission. Faxes, emails, and regular mail delivery submissions will not be accepted.
- Receipt of the submitted abstract will be acknowledged by an email.
- The Society is not responsible for undelivered messages; please call the Society to verify receipt at 614-442-5950.
Abstract Author(s)
- Include Primary Author and/or co-Authors name(s).
- Indicate up to 6 authors' names and initials; if more than 6, use “et al.”
- The submitting author is normally designated as the primary/presenting author. You may rearrange the order of the authors; however, always list the senior author first.
- Submission of an abstract constitutes a commitment by the author(s) to display a poster if accepted and/or give an oral presentation if invited.
Abstract Title
- The abstract title must be short and specific; and indicate the nature of the study/research.
Affiliation of Author(s)
- In the text, give the name of the institution where the main work was done.
Abstract Text
- Prepare structured abstracts with four headings: Background/Objectives, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
- Briefly describe the background/objectives of the study/research.
- Include a statement of methods.
- State results in detail.
- State supporting conclusions.
- Standard abbreviations may be used without definition. Nonstandard abbreviations (kept to a minimum) must be placed in parentheses after the first use of the word or phrase abbreviated.
Abstract Data
- Submit all abstracts in English.
- Proofread abstracts carefully to avoid errors before submission.
- The submitted abstract will be received in text format. Special characters, such as Greek letters, do not translate. Please contact the Society after submission, to verify text, if you must use special characters.
- Use single spacing throughout and indent paragraphs.
- Use only non-proprietary names of drugs.
- Do not use percentages alone; absolute numbers should also be provided.
- Define all abbreviations.
- Do not give references in the abstract.
Abstract Acceptance Process
- Abstract grading is blinded and is selected on the basis of scientific and demonstration activity merit.
- Submitting authors will be notified of acceptance/non-acceptance status by email no later than March 31, 2008.
- All accepted Abstract Presenters receive a special reduced registration rate of $175.00.
- Accepted abstracts will be published in the conference On-site Program Guide.
- Accepted abstracts will also be published in the September or December, 2008 issues of Critical Pathways in Cardiology. The Critical Pathways in Cardiology journal is index medicus listed, and is the official journal of the Society of Chest Pain Centers.
- Authors will need to complete and sign a copyright transfer agreement so that the accepted abstract can be published in the journal. Without the signed agreement the abstract will not be published. If any co-author names are listed on the abstract, they will also need to sign copyright transfer agreement. The agreement will be included with the acceptance email.
Abstract Format
- Only a few of the abstracts submitted and accepted will be given the opportunity to be presented orally. Guidelines for abstract oral presentations will be provided to those authors who are invited to give an oral presentation.
- All other accepted abstracts will be selected as posters only. Guidelines for creating posters will be provided to authors at the time of acceptance.
CME
Maximum Credit hours: Total of 21.25
Credit hours per day: Wed. 2.5 hrs.; Thurs. 6.5 hrs.; Fri. 6.25 hrs., Sat. 6 hrs.
CME - Physicians
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essentials Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) and Society of Chest Pain Centers. The University of Massachusetts Medical School is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The UMMS designates this continuing medical education activity for a maximum of 21.25 AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s) ™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Approved by the American College of Emergency Physicians for 21.25 hours of ACEP Category I credit.
CONTACT HOURS - Nurses
This offering meets the requirements for 27 contact hours for nurses as specified by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in nursing (244-CMR 5.04). Each nurse should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity .
